Forwarding Ports to your SIP Device

 Getting your new SIP phone or PBX up and running requires you to forward ports to your VoIP device. Essentially what you are doing is allowing a network port on your router to route to a device's port on your local network. This allows the internet to "talk" to your device without allowing traffic you do not want on your network. This is what is commonly called a firewall or NAT issue.

Problems Solved with Port Forwards

  • One way audio

  • No audio

  • Unable to register the device

What Needs to be Done 

You may need to set a static IP for your device. You can do this by accessing the router and editing the configuration of the DHCP server. You will be able to assign the static IP address to the devices MAC address or hostname. If you can not ID which is the correct device by hostname within the router settings then try to read the MAC address on the devices identification sticker on the device housing. Once you have found the MAC address set the IP to the MAC address. After this you will will need to forward ports to the device.

When forwarding ports access your router and find the section on port forwards. You will need to input the ports and point them to the IP address your device resides at. The IP is a network address and it looks something like .Your needed IP address may be different then in my example. The ports you need to forward are listed below. 

  • 5060 TCP/UDP forwarded to the device IP address

  • 10,000 to 20,000 UDP forwarded to the device IP address

How Does it Work?

The SIP signaling is happening on port 5060. This sets up the call connection. Once the call is setup two ports are chosen in the UDP 10,000 to 20,000 port range to setup RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) streams of audio. A UDP port in the 10,000 to 20,000 range sends audio to your called party and a UDP port is used to receive audio. One way audio or even no audio can mean that a UDP port was blocked. Not being able to register could mean port 5060 has not been forwarded.
