Devices provide a connection between a physical IP phone (e.g. your desk phone, computer, smartphone, etc.), the phone system, and associated calling features. Devices can also act as endpoints for a call routing path. For example, a phone number can be routed to a device, or a device can be part of a ring group. Users can also place phone calls from their devices to internal and external endpoints. In the simplest case, a device ties a physical IP endpoint to a logical endpoint on your phone system.

Additional features available for devices include a timeout and failover destination, unique Caller ID, and a specific Access Control List.

  • Physical device configuration: SIP devices vary greatly by manufacturer. As long as the device is SIP-compliant you can configure it with the Login and Password for the device to register to the associated instance. If you aren't sure how to configure your device, please consult technical support or the device manufacturer.
  • Call Parking: Access call parking by pressing '*9' (Star-9) while on active call. The system will place the caller on hold, read back an extension number between 1000-1999, and hang up your end of the call. The caller is now parked on an extension with hold music until retrieved by dialing '*9' (Star-9) while not on a call and entering the extension of the parked caller. Parked calls cannot be picked up on a different site than they were parked on. Call parking cannot be accessed on inbound calls that traversed a ring group.
  • Dialing rules: When calling the US/Zone 1 it is not necessary to enter a 1 before the number. Calling international requires a 011 or + to be sent before the number. Calls sent to a device will be sent with the username in the SIP INVITE.
  • Allowed Codecs: PCMU (G.711u), PCMA (G.711a), G.722, and GSM which are all recommended at 20 ms ptime.

There are two options available within the dialog box: the 'cancel' button and the 'delete' button. Selecting the 'cancel' button terminates the delete request. Selecting the 'delete' button processes the delete request and permanently removes the device from the device table and from the instance.

  • Channel Limit: Devices can have between 1 and 25 channels. A channel is a "line" that your phone uses to place or receive a call. Typically, one call requires one channel.
  • Timeout: The duration of a timeout can be set to anywhere between 1-120 seconds. A timeout specifies how long the device will ring before transferring the caller to a specified failover destination or hanging up the call.
  • Failover drop down menu: Specifies where callers will be directed if the device does not answer within the timeout period. This can be any other routable destination such as a menu or voice mail box. If no failover is assigned to the device (and the failover drop down menu is set to '------'), callers will be disconnected once once the timeout duration is reached.
  • Caller ID Name: Enter a specific name to be set and displayed on outbound calls.
  • Caller ID Number: Enter a specific number to be set and displayed on outbound calls.

  • Timezone Drop Down Menu: Select the correct timezone from the dropdown menu (e.g. 'US/Eastern'). Selecting a timezone is optional.
